In the chapter on Dante's
Divine Comedy, Dante's Pilgrimage to the Light, The Descent, Claudio Naranjo
says:
“Each individual comes to
maturity after a face-to-face encounter with the devil himself at the center of
his heart. And this will also happen towards the end of hell when Virgil places
Dante in front of Lucifer in the center of the Earth."
Claudio Naranjo “Cantos del Despertar”, Ediciones La Llave, page 179
In the detail of the Last
Judgment, the condemned in hell in the fresco by Giotto di Bondone made around
1300-1305, located in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, we see the blue body of
the devil, as well as the ventral “mouth” through which it excretes and gives
birth to the damned it has devoured as we see it as well in Dante´s Inferno Illustration by Sandro Botticelli. We can find this mouth in type I tarots of
the French tradition, as well as in restorations in which characteristic
details or symbols of this type have been recovered, such as the
Camoin-Jodorowsky deck. The representation of the Devil seated, as in the
fresco, is found in the RWS.
Triumph XV, The Devil, in
the Tarots of Jean Noblet (Paris, 1650-1659) Gallica BNF and Felip Vachie,
1639, Private Collection. The oldest representations of the Devil in the TdM.
And the Devil from the RWS deck, 1910.
